Simple Supplement System

Instead of plastic baggies, use food containers to premix your supplements! Many barns use a “SmartPak style” system, where you can provide SmartPaks or premix your own supplements. This makes feeding time so much easier for barn staff. Scooping individual supplements is time consuming and supplement bags and buckets require a lot of space to store.I commonly see this being done with plastic baggies- but I’ve found that to be quite messy and it produces a lot of waste. These little food containers are so nice! They are reusable and many of them are dishwasher safe (but not all- don’t make this mistake- it’s not pretty). And there are several sizes to choose from!

I got this set on Amazon. I periodically take the empty containers home and bring back refills. When they start to get a little icky, I just toss them in the dishwasher and they look brand new.

Pictured is my horse’s supplement drawer. His barn provides a drawer for every boarder. We also keep Bute and/or Banamine in our drawers for use, as needed, which I love. No one wants to be digging through your things searching for Banamine in an emergency! This keeps it easily accessible.

What kind of system does your barn use? What do you prefer? Share in the comments!
